Durham

What’s it all about?

Did you know, if everyone who lives within the DH1 postcode committed to spending £5 extra each week with our independent businesses, it would put £5 million into our local economy each year.

Durham City is full of small independent businesses, so here at Totally Locally Durham we’d like to help  you discover them.  Then come on in, have a chat with the person behind counter, ask their advice, learn their name, enjoy great service, and then tell everyone you know about the brilliant independent business you’ve discovered.

Market Place and Prince Bishops

Not only will you find independents in the Market Hall, Market Place and in Prince Bishops, but you’ll regularly find even more in the Market Place at the city’s markets.

Silver Street & Back Silver Street/  Fowler’s Yard

Silver Street has said goodbye to many big names, but has plenty of independents for you to discover – while Back Silver Street and Fowler’s Yard is and ‘unexpected pocket of creativity’.

Elvets – New, Old and Bridge

The cobbles take you from Saddler Street, over Elvet Bridge, and on the way you’ll find independent businesses, cafes and restaurants.

100% Independent

Why support independents?  Because, every pound spend with independents stays local, and supports more small businesses.  That’s good for all of us.

And, thriving independents make Durham different from any other High Street.

A unique high street is one to visit!

[Totally Locally] led to some businesses enjoying their busiest ever trading time despite the pandemic. The plan has breathed life into trading communities in cities and commuter towns, offering a lifeline for small enterprises and enacting positive social change which many hope will survive long after coronavirus.

-The Independent, Happy List 2021.

The role of Independent Businesses has never been more important in the revitalisation of high streets ups and down the country. Durham is no exception and is lucky to have such a wide range of quality independent businesses to add to the attractions of the World Heritage Site.

-Colin Wilkes MBE, Durham Markets Company.

It’s vitally important that the heart of Durham is a vibrant and varied community and independent businesses are playing a key part in that. These small businesses are fighting back as the city recovers from the pandemic, and it’s up to us all to support them in their recovery.

-Cllr Elizabeth Scott, Chair of the Business Committee of City of Durham Parish Council
